Spanish
At Croxby Primary School we are Linguists!
Intent
At Croxby Primary School, WE ARE LINGUISTS!
We want our children to love learning languages and being immersed in different cultures. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up inspired to be translators, field researchers or Modern Foreign Language teachers!
At Croxby Primary School, we study Spanish as a foreign language. We follow a sequence of lessons using BCC Languages to support teaching. The curriculum is organised into different blocks or topics across each term, and all cover the four pillars of language; speaking, listening, reading and writing. Some of these topics include: My Family, The Carnival of Animals, The Planets and In the Cafe. Linking learning to phonics, etymology and morphology to support understanding of the Spanish language are crucial elements of the lessons.
Our intent is to support our children in developing their understanding and love of a second language. In addition, we want to equip them and give them the tools to support them when transitioning into high school. We aim to do this through fun and engaging lessons. We want our children to enjoy learning Spanish!
Implementation
At Croxby we begin to teach Spanish in Year 3 up until Year 6 and it is taught by class teachers once a week for 30 minutes. In KS1, teachers are encouraged, when possible, to familiarise children with the language of Spanish, either through songs, stories or teaching them simple and easy phrases.
Our Spanish curriculum began rolling out in the academic year 2021/22. We worked hard to incorporate lots of retrieval and flashbacks into our lessons to ensure knowledge sticks. We did this to allow children to fill any gaps in their Spanish learning as the new curriculum was implemented.
Impact
The impact of this curriculum design will lead to outstanding progress over time across key stages relative to a child’s individual starting point and their progression of skills.
HOW DO WE KNOW WHAT CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED?
-
Questioning
-
Pupil Study (talking about learning with the children)
-
Talking to teachers
-
Low stakes ‘Drop-in’ observations
-
Retrieval practise
-
Live feedback
We ensure learners acquire comprehensive vocabulary knowledge and a range of language skills presented in engaging and age-appropriate content. At Croxby, our commitment to delivering high-quality language teaching has led to significant improvements in attainment levels and retrieval of knowledge in Spanish. This positive impact is reflected in the heightened profile of Spanish throughout the school. By incorporating Spanish music, simple phrases and celebrations, we strive to create a consistent learning environment across both key stages, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Spanish language amongst all learners.
